Solar Covers are made from specialised materials (including UV-stabilized polyethylene, polypropylene, and vinyl) and have a special 'bubble' structure. As well as being able to insulate swimming pools against unnecessary heat loss and reducing evaporation, solar covers can also protect the pool from rain and debris.

These solar pool covers work like a floating solar panel as they can help warm up the pool water. They work by utilising the sun’s rays that pass through the solar cover and the special bubbles trap the heat that is generated underneath the cover. Essentially, this allows to solar cover to retain heat and help to warm up the water. On a sunny day, you could see as much as an 8°C temperature rise. An inexpensive solar pool cover will recoup it’s purchasing price in a very short time, effectively cutting energy losses and dramatically reducing the cost of keeping your pool warm. These swimming pool solar covers are very lightweight and they can be taken on and off the pool by hand.

Please note that to reap the benefits of a solar cover, you must keep your swimming pool covered as much as possible when it’s not being used.

Energy Saving Solar Gain - Light or Dark, Translucent or Opaque - Which is Best?

There is something of a debate going on regarding the pros and cons of opaque and black covers versus clear covers that let light through. In order to heat your pool, you definitely need to let the sunshine through. Whilst a clear solar cover will let the sun’s rays through, a tinted cover will be able to retain more heat, and a solar pool cover with a reflective underside will be able to hold on to even more heat.

We would recommend a black or an opaque solar cover for pools in warm places like France or Spain, especially if you are away for much of the year. This is because an opaque cover will keep the light out, thus reducing the growth of algae which turns the swimming pool water green. Black of opaque swimming pool solar covers can also be used indoors where the solar gain is not an issue. A black or opaque cover makes a cheaper alternative to superior insulation foam covers.

Thicker materials only create marginal improvements in solar gain. The thicker membranes are more to do with helping covers to stand up to better wear and tear due to their greater strength and durability.

We think our blue-silver 400 micron solar covers are the best all round value.
