Solar Covers are made from specialised materials (including UV-stabilized polyethylene, polypropylene, and vinyl) and have a special 'bubble' structure. As well as insulating your pool against unnecessary heat loss, reducing evaporation, and protecting your pool from rain and debris, solar covers work like a floating solar panel and help to warm up the pool water. This is because as the sun's rays pass through the solar cover, the heat generated is trapped by the bubbles underneath the cover, and this retained heat helps to warm up your pool water. On a sunny day, you could see as much as an 8°C temperature rise. An inexpensive solar blanket will recoup its purchase price in a very short time, cutting energy losses and dramatically reducing the cost of keeping your pool warm. These covers are very lightweight and can be taken on and off the pool by hand.

Please note that to reap these benefits, you must keep your pool covered as much as possible when it's not being used.

Energy Saving Solar Gain - Light or Dark, Translucent or Opaque - Which is Best?

There is something of a debate going on regarding the pros and cons of opaque and black covers versus clear covers that let light through. In order to heat your pool, you definitely need to let the sunshine through. A clear cover lets the sun's rays through, but a tinted cover keeps more heat in, and a cover with a reflective underside holds on to even more heat.

We would recommend a black or opaque solar cover for pools in warm places like France or Spain, especially if you are away for much of the year. This is because an opaque cover will keep the light out, thus reducing the growth of algae which turns swimming pool water green. Black or opaque solar covers can also be used indoors where solar gain is not an issue. A black or opaque cover makes a cheaper alternative to superior insulating foam covers.

Thicker materials create only marginal improvements in solar gain. The thicker membranes are more to do with helping covers stand up to better wear and tear because of their greater strength and durability.

We think our blue-silver 400 micron solar covers are the best all round value.
