Gas heating is one of the best choices for most people. Although more expensive initially than electric heaters, natural gas boilers are more economical to run and provide rapid economic warm up at any time. They are not restricted to off peak fuel charges etc. Most are weatherproof and (with little necessity for protection from the elements), are simplest to site outdoors. Indoor versions are available for exactly the same price, but require stainless steel flues which are extra (typically around £150).
Natural gas is cheapest to run. LPG propane heaters cost the same and are ideal for portability and simplicity, or where there is no mains gas.
When comparing prices of gas and electric heating, bear in mind that the smallest gas heater is still bigger than the largest electric heater that can be connected to an ordinary single phase domestic cable. A 55000 btu gas heater is roughly equivalent to a 15kw electric element, but most electricity supplies will only support 9 or 12kw.
For outdoor pools we advise about 10btu per gallon of pool water, with 20btu per gallon desirable for long term economy and satisfaction. See approximate statistics and conversion factors for typical pools.
