These clever machines actually take "free" heat out of fresh air. They work like an air conditioner in reverse, making the outdoors air around them cooler and feeding the heat extracted into the pool water. They use the same principle as your fridge freezer which has hot tubes at the back disipating heat taken from your food. The only power required is that used to run a small compressor, enabling them to give out up to five times the energy consumed from your electricity supply.
All our Heat Pumps are super efficient, economical and environmentally friendly pool heating systems. Heat pumps have the lowest possible carbon footprint and running costs. For the most modern, efficient, reliable and eco friendly heating for your swimming pool, we have no hesitation in recommending our low cost heatpumps.
We suggest the following guide power outputs. As long as you keep the pool covered when not in use, these should be capable of giving you comfortable swimming throughout a typical UK open air swimming season (see below)
Inground swimming pools:
24' x 12' and 28' x 14' - 12 to 16kw
30' x 15' - 15 to 25kw
32' x 16' and 36' x 18' - 23 to 31kw
40' x 20' - 30 to 36kw
Above ground swimming pools:
12' - 8 to 12kw
15', 18' and 20' x 12' - 9 to 16kw
24' x 12' - 15 to 18kw
30' x 15' - 15 to 25kw
33' x 18' - 23 to 31kw
Heatpumps have achieved ever increasing popularity in recent years due to mass production leading to low prices coupled with snowballing worldwide energy costs and environmental worries. Inevitably there have been a few dubious suppliers and manufacturers trying to jump on the cut price band-wagon, and some people who thought they were saving money ended up making decisions they now regret. Clicking on a potentially shoddy machine from a seller you have no way of checking out is an obvious risk that some are still prepared to take. Our advice is to stick with machines that have a verifiable track record. There is a bewildering aray of good heatpumps on the market and quality-wise you can't really go wrong with any of the units listed below. If we had to choose, DPL, Waterco and Duratech have probably provided us with the most reliable machines and consistently high service and back up levels over recent times and they are undoubtedly worthy of our recommendation. But we sincerely believe that all the heatpumps below are good value for money, otherwise we would not be offering them to our valued customers. Heatpumps should be fundamentally as trouble free as fridge-freezers because they share similar technology. A properly manufactured heatpump should easily last you twice as long as an equivalent gas heater for example, which makes them an even better investment.
Over 80% of heat losses are due to evaporation. A cheap solar blanket will recoup its cost in a very short time, cutting energy losses by 50% to 95%, and helping to extend your pool season. See Solar & Thermal Covers. Leaving a pool uncovered at night may actually waste more energy than you pay for during the day, even in summer, and especially in windy conditions. Just using a pool cover overnight can easily save over 40% of your annual heating costs.
Heat pumps are the perfect solution for economic summer season heating. Although most heat pumps can operate down to ambient air temperatures close to freezing, they produce less heat the colder it gets. For all practical purposes therefore, we do not recommend relying on heatpumps once typical daytime temperatures have fallen much below the 15C mark. Realistically, at these temperatures you will most likely not want to be swimming outdoors in any case. For indoor pools you will need back up heating installed after the heatpump, with its thermostat set to come on only if your heatpump isn’t coping. We recommend a good electric pool heater for example, run at night on an off peak electricity tariff, such as those on Electric Swimming Pool Heaters.
Heat pumps are ideally suited for heating your pool from May to September. With various climate changes that we have been experiencing in recent years, some of our customers have even been running their heat pumps successfully from early April to late October.
Sizing the heater for your swimming pool is not an exact science due to so many variables such as thermal insulation, and wind speed. If your budget allows, it is always desirable to buy the largest size, due to it being more cost effective and efficient thus resulting in a quicker heat up time. But do ask your electrician to check that you have a suitable electricity supply before ordering (see technical details at the bottom of this page and in heatpump brochures). If in doubt you may wish to consider getting two smaller heatpumps for example, rather than one large one.

Our heatpumps are all of exceptional quality, and will work down to some very low outside air temperatures, even to below freezing in some cases. For details please see the relevant brochures. But for winter swimming, indoors or out, they will all struggle a bit. We therefore advise, in these cases, some sort of additional top-up heating. For example you could plumb in an electric or gas heater after the heatpump, and set the thermostats on both machines so that your top-up heater only cuts in if your heat pump has not already supplied all the warmth you require.
Heat Pumps can be over 400% more efficient than conventional electric heaters, extracting energy from air and transfering heat into the pool. They work on the same principle as an air conditioner or refrigerator in reverse, expelling air cooled to about 5°C below the surrounding environment.
An impressive innovation of most of our latest models is the Titanium Exchager. The Titanium exchanger will last up to 3 times longer than standard copper exchangers used on other Heat Pumps. These swimming pool heat pumps. They are completely suitable for saltwater chlorinated pools and as added protection against chlorine and bromine. They have Direct Set Thermostats. Just set your ideal temperature and the our Heat Pumps do the rest automatically. Accurately monitor your pool water temperature, saving energy and telling bathers the exact temperature before they swim.
There is no universally agreed standard for quoting coeficient of performance (COP) and output power. This is a problem when comparing different brands of heatpumps. Models measured at a relatively cool ambient air temperature of 15°C seem unfairly worse value than those quoted up to a glorious 25°C. So, in an effort to create more of a level playing field, we have calculated very approximate fair comparison output power estimates, based on a like-for-like average air temperature around 20°C.
Until recently the money saving technology of heatpump engineering was very expensive, and break-even times were quite lengthy. But now at last, with our amazing new prices, this is a realistic cost cutting option for any swimming pool. As a bonus they are expected to last twice as long as a typical swimming pool gas heater.
The only problem you may have to consider is that, although running currents are very modest, the surge of elecricity when the compressor starts up can be big enough to make light bulbs in your house dim momentarily (like car headlamps when you operate the starter). This will not normally prevent you from having a heatpump, but we still advise you to talk to a good electrician and make sure your power supply is up to the job. We will be happy to supply you with full technical specifications on request.
Although not usually essential, it is worthwhile connecting a by-pass in parallel across your heatpump. This simply requires two tees, a valve, and a short length of pipe, which we can supply. Reducing the flow through your heatpump, by shunting a proportion of the pool water around it, can help fine tune the performance of your heatpump and help it work to peak efficiency. The extra pipework also makes it easier to drain down your heatpump when you are not using it in the winter, which is essential to prevent freezing damage inside.
