More Information
When comparing the prices of gas and electric pool heating, it’s important to note that even the smallest gas heater is larger than the largest electric heater that can be connected to a standard single-phase domestic circuit. A 55,000 BTU gas heater provides approximately the same amount of heat as a 15kW electric heater.
However, most electrical supplies typically support only 9 kW or 12 kW electric heaters. Most gas heaters are weatherproof and require minimal protection from the elements, making them ideal for outdoor swimming pools. For outdoor pools, we recommend approximately 10 BTU per gallon of water, and 20 BTU per gallon for long-term economy and satisfaction. These outdoor gas heaters are fully self-contained. Indoor versions are also available at the same price, but they will need stainless steel flues. Natural gas is the least expensive option to operate, while propane gas can be used for its portability and convenience, offered at the same price.
How They Work
Gas pool heaters work by using natural gas or propane to quickly warm the water, making them a popular choice for maintaining comfortable swimming temperatures. The system consists of a burner, a heat exchanger, and a pump. Pool water is drawn in through a pump and passes through its heat exchanger, where the gas-fueled burner generates intense heat. This heat transfers to the water as it circulates, warming it efficiently before returning it to the pool. One of the key advantages of this system is its ability to rapidly raise water temperatures, making it ideal for those who want quick results, even in colder weather or for occasional pool use. They are effective for both in-ground and above-ground pools, offering consistent and reliable performance.
The Benefits of Gas Pool Heating
Gas pool heaters offer a range of benefits that make them an attractive option for pool owners. Known for their efficiency and speed, they can quickly heat pool water, allowing you to enjoy a warm, comfortable swim even on short notice. This fast heating capability makes them particularly suitable for cooler climates or for those who use their pool sporadically, as they can rapidly adjust to changing temperature needs. Additionally, they are versatile, working effectively with both in-ground and above-ground pools, and don’t rely on sunlight like solar heaters, ensuring consistent performance regardless of the weather. While they may have higher operating costs compared to other options, their ability to deliver immediate and reliable heating often outweighs this consideration for those prioritising convenience and performance.
