How do I choose?

Air source heat pumps have achieved ever-increasing popularity in recent years due to mass production leading to low prices, coupled with snowballing world-wide energy costs and environmental worries. Inevitably there have been a few dubious suppliers and manufacturers trying to jump on the cut-price band-wagon, and some people who thought they were saving money ended up making decisions they now regret. Our advice is to stick with machines that have a verifiable track record. There is a bewildering array of good heat pumps on the market and quality-wise you can’t really go wrong with any of the units we supply. These pumps should be fundamentally as trouble free as fridge-freezers because they share similar technology.

Heat pumps are the perfect solution for economic summer season heating. They are best suited for use during the ‘summer season’ from April to September when outside temperatures are generally higher. Although most pumps can operate down to ambient air temperatures close to freezing, they produce less heat the colder it gets. For all practical purposes, therefore, we do not recommend relying on air source heat pumps once typical daytime temperatures have fallen much below the 15°C mark. Realistically, at these temperatures, you will most likely not want to be swimming outdoors in any case. For indoor swimming pools, you will need back up heating installed after the air source heat pump, with its thermostat set to come on only if your pump isn’t coping. We recommend a good electric pool heater to be run at night during an ‘off peak’ electricity tariff. We also strongly recommend using a solar or thermal cover to help insulate your pool.

Sizing the heater for your swimming pool is not an exact science due to so many variables such as thermal insulation, and wind speed. If your budget allows, it is always desirable to buy the largest size, due to it being more cost effective and efficient thus resulting in a quicker heat up time. But do ask your electrician to check that you have a suitable electricity supply before ordering.

Although not usually essential, it is worthwhile connecting a bypass in parallel across your heat pump. This simply requires two tees, a valve, and a short length of pipe, which we can supply. Reducing the flow through your heat pump by shunting a proportion of the pool water around it, can help fine tune the performance of your heat pump and help it work to peak efficiency. The extra pipework also makes it easier to drain down your heat pump when you are not using it in the winter, which is essential to prevent freezing damage inside.

Important notes:

Heat pumps are best sited outdoors. If sited indoors they must have adequate and unrestricted air flow from outside. They must be fitted and commissioned by qualified tradesmen in accordance with current regulations. You are advised to check that your supply can support your preferred power input before ordering. Test water regularly to avoid acid or scale damage which could invalidate the warranty. Heat pumps must be operated within their seasonal and waste flow-rate design limits.

The Benefits

Pool heat pumps offer numerous benefits, making them a popular choice among customers. These products are renowned for their energy efficiency, as they extract heat from the air and transfer it to the water, significantly reducing operating costs compared to traditional gas heaters. By maintaining a consistent water temperature, they extend the swimming season, allowing owners to enjoy their pools even in cooler weather. They are environmentally friendly, as they rely on renewable energy sources and produce fewer emissions, aligning with sustainable practices. Additionally, they are known for their reliability and low maintenance requirements, offering a hassle-free solution that ensures comfort and enjoyment throughout the year.

Can heat pumps be used with any type of swimming pool?

Yes, pool heat pumps are versatile and can be used with most types of swimming pools, including both in-ground and above-ground pools. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. The size of the swimming area, its location, and the local climate can all impact how effectively a pump will work. For instance, larger pools may require a more powerful unit, while locations with cooler climates might need additional features to maintain the desired water temperature. Consult with our experts and we can recommend the best pool heat pump for your specific setup, ensuring compatibility and efficient operation.
