What is a Swimming Pool Enclosure?
A swimming pool enclosure is a structure built over or around your pool that acts as a barrier against wind, rain and cold, letting you use an outdoor pool in weather that would otherwise keep you out of it. Translucent enclosures also trap solar heat, which can cut your heating costs and extend your swimming season well beyond the usual British summer. Whether you need one depends mostly on how much you want to use your pool each year and how exposed your garden is to wind and rain.
Benefits of a Pool Enclosure
Beyond extending the season, a pool enclosure pays for itself in a few practical ways. It traps solar heat and cuts wind chill, so your pool needs less energy to heat and holds its temperature for longer once it’s warm.
It also keeps leaves, insects and animals out of the water, which means less time spent skimming and vacuuming and less chemical needed to keep the water balanced, since there’s less debris and organic matter breaking the chlorine down. Less direct sunlight reaching the water, depending on the enclosure type, also slows algae growth.
Some enclosures double up as a safety barrier too, particularly dome designs, giving an extra layer of protection around the pool when it’s not in use.
Types of Pool Enclosures
There’s more than one way to enclose a pool and which type suits you depends on your budget, how much full access you want to the pool area and how much of a visual feature you want it to be.
- Low Profile enclosures sit close to the water and strike a middle ground between a flat pool cover and a full structure, good if you want some protection without changing how the pool area looks too much.
- Full Height enclosures give you a walk-around space you can stand and move in freely, closer to an indoor pool experience.
- Folding enclosures slide back out of the way entirely when you want the pool fully open on a good day.
- Pool domes are one of the most popular choices. A pool with a dome enclosure gives you a fully covered, weatherproof space without the bulk of a full height structure and many pool dome designs can be retracted or removed on warm days.
Choosing the Right Enclosure
The right enclosure comes down to a few things: your budget, how much headroom you want inside it, whether you want to open it up fully on dry days and how exposed your garden is to wind and rain. If you’re not sure which type fits your pool, it’s worth talking it through before you buy, since an enclosure is a bigger investment than most pool accessories.
