How They Work
While traditional chemicals are standard for keeping your water safe, upgrading your plant room with a UV pool system or an ozone pool system takes your water hygiene to a new level.
- Pool UV Systems: A UV pool sanitiser operates by directing pool water through a specialised chamber containing a powerful ultraviolet lamp. As the water flows past, intense UV-C light penetrates the cells of bacteria, viruses and algae. This instantly neutralises the microorganisms, destroying their DNA and preventing them from reproducing.
- Ozone Systems: A pool ozone generator produces ozone gas and safely injects it into the pool’s circulation line. Ozone is one of the most powerful natural oxidisers available; it destroys organic contaminants, bacteria and body oils on contact before naturally converting back into pure oxygen.
The Benefits of UV and Ozone Technology
Investing in a swimming pool UV system or an ozone generator offers noticeable advantages for both residential and commercial swimming pools:
- Drastically Reduced Chemical Usage: By doing the heavy lifting of destroying bacteria and organic matter, these systems can reduce your reliance on traditional chlorine or bromine by up to 80%.
- Eliminates “Chlorine Smell” and Irritation: UV purifiers and ozone effectively break down chloramines. These are the irritating chemical byproducts responsible for the strong chemical smell, red stinging eyes and dry skin often associated with swimming pools.
- Clear Water: By neutralising microscopic contaminants and algae spores that standard filters might miss, these systems ensure your pool water remains clean.
- Eco-Friendly Operation: Both technologies are environmentally friendly and sustainable, leaving no harmful chemical residues behind in your pool water.
Do I Still Need Chlorine?
A common question when installing pool UV systems or an ozone pool system is whether you can eliminate chlorine entirely. The short answer is no, but you will use significantly less of it.
While UV and ozone are incredibly effective at destroying contaminants as the water passes through the equipment, they do not leave a “residual” sanitiser out in the main body of the pool. A low background level of chlorine is still required in the water to deal with any new bacteria introduced instantly by bathers or debris. However, because the primary purification is being handled by the technology, the small amount of chlorine required will be virtually unnoticeable to swimmers.
