Sacrificial Anodes

Corrosion Protection for Your Pool

A sacrificial anode is a small metal fitting attached to your swimming pool’s plumbing to protect the more expensive parts, like the heat exchanger, ladders, handrails and lights, from corrosion. Chlorine pools have some corrosion risk, but if you have a saltwater system, you will need one, since salt chlorination speeds up the process significantly.

What is a Sacrificial Anode & Why Does My Pool Need One?

A sacrificial anode, sometimes just called a pool anode, is a small metal fitting that protects your pool’s expensive metal parts, like the heat exchanger, ladders, handrails and lights, from corrosion. When different metals sit together in water, a small electrical current passes between them and the less resistant metal corrodes first. A pool anode is made from a metal that’s deliberately more reactive than everything else in the system, so it wears away in place of your equipment.

This matters more for saltwater pools. Salt chlorination creates a constant low-level electrical environment that speeds up corrosion, so an anode is cheap insurance for the metal fittings around your pool. Over time, you’ll see it visibly wear down and once it’s used up it’s done its job and needs replacing.

Which Pool Anode Do You Need?

Picking the right sacrificial anode for your pool depends on how it’s being used. Some swimming pool anodes are designed to be plumbed inline as part of a new pool build, giving general corrosion protection from day one. Others are built specifically for salt chlorinator systems, where the risk is higher because of the constant electrolysis process. If you’re retrofitting an anode to an existing salt pool rather than fitting one during a new build, make sure you choose the version designed for that.

How to Choose the Right Swimming Pool Anode

Whichever swimming pool anode you’re looking at, the right one for your setup depends on a few things: whether your pool is salt or chlorine sanitised, the fitting or socket size your pipework uses, and how visible or accessible the anode needs to be for regular checks. If you’re not sure which one fits, it’s worth checking before you buy, since fitting the wrong type won’t give your equipment proper protection.
