During the warm summer months, a swimming pool is a massive attraction, inviting your friends over for drinks by the pool or getting a pool party together for your kids and their friends is a great way to take advantage of the warm weather. Sadly, when the temperature starts to drop and winter comes in, swimming in a pool becomes less viable with many looking toward closing it for the remainder of the winter before its reopening when the weather improves. Knowing the right time to shut a swimming pool can increase its longevity and protect it from the external factors that may cause it damage, read on for tips on when you should close your swimming pool.

Leaves and Debris

With the onset of Autumn, falling leaves and strong winds make an appearance, if you’re the owner of an outdoor pool you will realise that the water surface seems to collect leaves and debris from a ridiculously large area. Keeping your pool running during the autumn is perfectly reasonable if the weather is but will require a copious amount of cleaning, scooping, and vacuuming to keep your swimming pool clear of all the matter that may get in there.

Freezing Temperature

If the water in your pool is frozen you may find swimming challenging, luckily in most cases, your pool will be closed long before the water reaches freezing temperatures. If the weather starts to drop rapidly or freezing temperatures are forecasted it may be a good idea to look toward closing the pool. A pool heater can compensate for slight dips in temperature but can be very costly when used over a longer period of time.

Not Suited to Swimming

Regardless of if you’re an avid fitness swimmer or a casual pool lounger water temperature will have a large impact on your general enjoyment. Swimming pools are highly prone to temperature changes depending on the external conditions and will become less practical with colder temperatures making swimming in them unpleasant especially if they are used in recreation rather than fitness purposes in mind. Colder water temperatures limit algae growth and stop bacterial spread making sure that your pool is in peak condition before the start of summer.

A swimming pool is a fantastic part of any home but has to be managed in order to keep functional and making sure that it’s prepared for the colder months is a vital part of that process. Every swimming pool is different and the date at which you should close it will highly depend on where you are based and the weather in your local area, making sure that you have a plan in place for when you will close it and how you will close it will make the whole process more streamlined.
